  • Relax, take a deep breath. Don’t expect to get hired quickly; hope and pray.
  • Don’t take a few weeks off for a vacation, since you worked all these 20 + years and now deserve a break.  Do something now while fresh out of work. Try to get up the same time and do SOMETHING, even if it is one feeble attempt to find a job. You will thank yourself later.
  • Contact everyone you know; don’t think it is a imposition on people, they will help. But they need to know you are looking for and what you do. Believe it or not, most of your friends and family have no idea what you do.
  • Use your email contacts, friends, co-workers, ex-coworkers, church, neighbors, gym, diner, coffee shop, your old suppliers, vendors, mechanics, business contacts, groups you belong to.  Follow up after a month and tell them you are still looking, stay in touch, even just to say hi.
  • Be persistently polite.
  • Get back up. I never learned to stay down when hit, must be my karate training.
  • Doing something your really enjoy is “first.” It keeps your sanity. Depression is an evil dragon.
